Trauma is how we describe an emotional response to a terrible or shocking event.
It can cover a vast array of experiences in both children and adults.
this can include an accident, abuse such as domestic violence or sexual abuse, a natural disaster or sudden loss.
Trauma can be defined within sub groups
Acute Trauma:- which would relate to a single event, such as a car accident, a sexual assault or the sudden loss of a loved one.
Chronic Trauma:-This involves repeated and prolonged trauma events such as domestic violence, child and sexual abuse.
Complete Trauma:-When someone is exposed to a variety of different types of trauma events.
When Complex trauma occurs during the early years of someone’s life it can result in Developmental Trauma. This is often seen in children placed into the care system following Historical abuse or neglect. multiple trauma events throughout early life may in themselves be fairly small, however, over the years they accumulate an may only impact on mental health in day to day life as an adult. This can present in the form of. Panic attacks, and anxiety disorders.
Vicarious Trauma:- this type of trauma can be overlooked. It can develop a a result of being around trauma and if often seen amongst those working within the emergency services and in crisis work.
A traumatic event that has had far reaching consequences has been Covid that has left many people with significant longer term trauma symptoms.
